Unlike other marriage issues in South Asia, being single or divorced is a social stigma and not fatal at all, however the women who are single or divorced are many times invisible or an outcast to society. It is not typical of an indian marriage to end in divorce and that goes the same for single women; marriage is a sign of social status, not only for a woman but for her family. For that reason, if a woman does not marry, she is stripped from almost anything a married woman would have should she remain with her family. Some examples of this include: others will speak for the woman and the woman will not be allowed to wear feminine clothing.
In the culture of South Asia there is an expectation that a woman will get married and remain married. When a woman doesn’t live up to this societal norm, there are many negative results that come with this. As countries in South Asia, especially India, become more globalized, more women are starting to initiate divorce. Despite the fact that there is an increasing number of women who are becoming divorcees, it is still very hard for a woman to be accepted into society even after they redefine their image as a single woman. In addition, a growing number of women are choosing to be single. These women also face the same social oppression that divorcees incur.
