Acid throwing is a horrific act that permanently mutilates the victim’s body. This crime is especially heinous because the criminal committing the crime must first attain the acid before they use it to harm someone. Acid throwing comes as a result of rejection from a family, issues with a dowry, and other marriage problems that may arise. This is a tortious crime since for many of its victims it is not fatal and after the attack there is little to aid the women legally to get justice on their behalf.
It is simple to think that any government of South Asia should just ban any acid that could do permanent damage, but it’s harder than that. Often the attackers will use chemicals that are easily accessible like toilet cleaner or synthetic detergent. Because the perpetrators use readily available chemicals, it is hard to take legal action against prohibiting these chemicals. For women who become victim of these horrible attacks, it is a long road to recovery because there is not very good access to medical or psychological support in this part of the world.
